Effective consultation aimed at improving language programming for students with autism requires attention to complex verbal behavior. In order to address two key aspects of complex verbal behavior, namely autoclitic control and jointly controlled verbal responding, descriptions of conceptual and procedural considerations will be presented. The first topic will include a review of relational autoclitics and the role frames of control play in the development of generative responding. The discussion will contrast a molecular view of autoclitic responding with other explanatory models including relation frame theory. The second topic will involve a review of procedures, including recent studies completed by Dr. Carbone and his colleagues, addressing the role of joint control procedures in various instructional program to teach complex, multiply controlled verbal responding.

Objectives

Participants will:

  1. Identify and provide examples of relational autoclitic frames and discuss the contingencies that shape acquisition of such frames.
  2. State the basic conceptual framework for joint control procedures used to expand verbal competencies for children with Autism.
  3. Describe procedures for using an analysis of joint control to teach multiply controlled verbal responses.
